Box Hill Institute are excited to announce that they are offering a great range of certified Passive House courses in 2017!

These include Tradesperson courses for builders and tradespeople wanting Passive House certification; an introductory course for architects, engineers, designers, consultants, builders, homeowners and students looking to improve their knowledge of Passive House design; as well as Passive House Designer/Consultant courses for architects, engineers and building consultants seeking international accreditation.

With the first course due to commence on the 9th of May, the programs will be delivered throughout the year at CAE-Melbourne by certified Passive House designers Burkhard Hansen and APHA’s own Clare Parry.

It is fantastic to see training opportunities increasing every year, and we look forward to Box Hill Institute’s courses welcoming more people into the Passive House community.

Passive House Tradesperson

This course is aimed at building contractors looking to learn the skills and knowledge required to understand how to build to the International Passive House standard. This 5 day course covers the Building Envelope and Mechanical Systems specialities.

Passive House Introduction

Learn about Passive House principles and the methodology to create high performance, thermally comfortable and super energy efficient buildings. This course is useful for designers, architects, engineers, consultants, builders, home owners and students. The alternative options for becoming internationally accredited with Passive House accreditation are discussed and also the rapidly growing demand in the Australian market for Passive House buildings.

Preparatory maths and physics for Passive House Designers and Consultants

The international exam to become accredited as a Passive House Designer or Consultant is challenging. Most people that sit the test run out of time to attempt all questions. This course is highly recommended for people intending to complete the Passive House Designer/Consultant course and sit the international exam. Learning and practicing maths and physics specifically relevant to Passive House principles will be excellent grounding for the Passive House Designers and Consultants course and improve your chances of success in the notoriously rigorous international exam.

Passive House Designer/Consultant

Learn about Passive House principles and the methodology to create high performance, thermally comfortable and super energy efficient buildings. At completion of the course, you’ll have the opportunity to sit the Passive House examination which is set by the Passivhaus Institut (Germany) and takes place all over the world on four pre-determined dates per year. Before enrolling in this course it is highly recommended that applicants complete the Passive House Introduction course and the Preparatory maths and physics for Passive House Designers and Consultants course. So, get in on the ground floor, get qualified to practice as a Passive House designer or consultant so that you can tap into the rapidly growing demand in the Australian market for Passive House buildings.

Passive House PHPP Intensive

The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is a software tool that calculates the energy efficiency of a Passive House design. It uses climate data, heating and cooling loads, thermal bridge calculations and much more. This course is suitable for people who have completed the Passive House Designer/ Consultant Course and want more experience working with the PHPP to confidently tackle their first project.

Burkhard Hansen is passionate about energy efficiency and living comfort. To Burkhard, Passive House standards are the foundation of a healthy living environment. Through modern engineering and considerations of building physics, Burkhard aims for Passive House to be a mainstream, affordable and readily available option. He has been involved in successfully executed airtight and energy efficient prefab construction methods in Europe and is keen to be part of the driving force of this change in Australia. To sustain and support this change, he believes it is vital to teach the awareness, knowledge, skills and understanding of building performance, both from a theoretical and practical level. Burkhard has over 14 years of experience working in various countries around the world implementing Passive House standards.

Clare is a specialist in Passive House, with skills ranging from design through to certification. She is currently the Principal Sustainability Consultant at Grun Consulting – experts in ESD for town planning, multiple rating tools including LEED, Green Star and the Living Building Challenge, and energy ratings including NABERS & CBD. Grun Consulting also offers Triple Bottom Line consulting for organisations, including application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework. Clare is also currently the Director and Chair at Australian Passive House Association.
