The cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use

Passive Houses use up to 90% less energy for heating and cooling compared to a conventional building, saving occupants money and removing enormous stress on the network.

Why some construction industry bodies are rejecting change to energy efficiency standards in the National Construction Code seems absurd. Pleasingly, the new federal government seems to be motivated to reverse 10 years of inaction with regard to the energy grid. Hopefully the construction industry can take a good hard look at itself and realise that it's over 10 year behind the rest of the world, and embrace some positive change.

Australia is a decade late in both these areas. The time is now for immediate action.

The Guardian’s Peter Hannam explains Australia’s energy crisis in his new article. Read more here.
