Ross Styles is the Director at Ross Styles Consulting

Strategy and Governance Experience

"I believe I can contribute strongly to the APHA board. I have significant experience providing strategic analysis and advice at board level. I was an architect at Architectus for 31 years and a Director/Principal from 2005-2018. During that period we restructured and grew the firm from a Sydney based practice with 75 staff to a national network across 5 states with 400 staff and became well-regarded for design quality. The majority of my architectural experience is with residential projects at a range of scales, but I also have broad experience in the commercial, public and cultural sectors. I have a B.SC (Arch) and a B.Arch (Hons 1) from UNSW where I was awarded the Most Outstanding Architecture Graduate in 1975. I have a passion for environmentally responsible design and undertook a post-graduate course in Environmental Studies at Macquarie University in 1977-81 and this has been a fundamental influence on my work. With travelling scholarships, I did a M.Arch at the University of Pennsylvania and worked in the USA for 7 years. I am currently a Director of Ross Styles Consulting providing management advise in the design professions. I have been involved on a range of other business and community boards and committees."

Career history demonstrating experience and insight that you will bring to the leadership of APHA

"I have extensive Executive Level skills. Key attributes and Director experience are as follows:
Budget development and financial management
marketing, business development and business growth
strategic development of policy and corporate culture
contract review and negotiation
chairperson of quality assurance committee and developed the Architectus probity plan
responsibility for human resources and the development of a mentoring programme
I have undertaken the Company Directors course provided by the Australian Institute of Company Directors. I am experienced, energetic, innovative and a good listener. I have strong analytical, decision-making and advocacy skills. I prefer to work in a team environment where collaboration is the key strategy in achieving positive outcomes.
In 2018-19 I was a Non-Executive Director of MBC Group (a code consultant and private certifier). Their strategy was to restructure to grow their range and quality of services. I was able to contribute to achieve a successful outcome.

Please provide an example to demonstrate your strength as an influential leader that is able to drive change and outcomes?
"At Architectus board level I initiated a successful range of overseas work. I undertook and managed major projects in China from 2000-2015. That influenced the firm’s outlook to change and growth beyond the familiar corporate comfort zone. Driving environmental outcomes was a key criteria. It also provided a broad range of new architectural experiences to the staff. I also managed work in the Middle East from 2008-09. I am interested in bringing that energy and approach to APHA to explore opportunities to expand its influence and profile in new areas in support of its overall goals and to maximise outcomes.

Why does this opportunity attract you?  "Involvement on the APHA board provides an opportunity to contribute to strengthening the profile and influence of APHA in the design and construction professions, in Government and in the community. It is an opportunity to achieve a wider adoption of Passive House design and technical principles and, overall, to provide more environmentally comfortable and energy efficient residential living."

Please list any prior association committee or board experience or anything else you would like to add.

"I feel it’s important to contribute actively in the community beyond the workplace. I am a life member of the Manly Village P&C Association, a life member of the Manly-Allambie United Football Club, I’m a weekly volunteer at Wayside Chapel, I’m an online peer support volunteer for Cancer NSW and I’ve been a teacher for Primary Ethics at public schools."

Which role are you applying for?

General Board Member

The building industry accounts for almost 40% of all global carbon emissions worldwide. The buildings we design today will still be operational by 2050. Reaching net zero will require huge changes to our houses, offices, and schools and the way we live in them.
