Liam's Strategy and Governance experience:

From 2008 – 2012 I worked to establish a grass-roots training program and governance structure for freestyle skiing athletes at Mt Buller, VIC known as Team Buller Riders. Alumni athletes from the program during which time I was heavily involved now include multiple Olympians, including a 2022 Olympic gold medallist, an Olympic judge, the current Mogul National Team Head Coach and the current NSWIS Head Coach. A focus on fundamentals was an important part of the strategy. Being willing to consistently revisit why we existed as a program assisted in maintaining the consistency and discipline to continue to build skills and talent at multiple levels of the program to this day. Now as Founder & Managing Director of HIP V. HYPE, I set the strategy for the business to ultimately influence and build the more equitable, resilient and prosperous future we deserve. I am directly involved in providing strategic advice to the leadership team of the HIP V. HYPE as well as guiding strategy at an individual project level.

Career history demonstrating experience and insight that you will bring to the leadership of APHA:

"Following 10 years of working in the property development private sector, I founded HIP V. HYPE in 2015. The business has maintained a continuous growth trend over these past 7 years. We have delivered nationally and internationally-recognised and award winning best practice residential and mixed-use development projects alongside provided sustainability strategic policy advice, engagement and design services for local and state governments, institutional scale property developers and precinct scale urban renewal projects right through to single residential dwelling Passivhaus design and certification.

In addition to our business operations, HIP V. HYPE has invested in initiatives that advocate for better, more sustainable outcomes for our built environment including:

  • Hypecast podcast series, where we discuss new ideas around housing, sustainability and climate action to explore ways to support the sustainable growth of our cities and regions
  • Collective Exchange; series of in-person talks
  • GBCA membership
  • Sustainable House Day annual sponsorship
  • Involvement in numerous state and local government working groups across Australia."

Liam is a property developer with experience and connections across all project sectors APHA is looking to grow in. He has been a pioneer and an innovator who is actively shaking up what it means to be a property developer and run a built environment business in Australia.

Why does this opportunity attract you?

"My business HIP V. HYPE offers Passivhaus design and certification services primarily for single residential dwellings in Australia. Passivhaus certified buildings have a significant opportunity to support Australia’s carbon reduction targets whilst offering better occupant health, comfort and productivity outcomes, as well as tangible commercial outcomes for building owners.  Based on experience, I see that significant opportunities exist for Passivhaus in education, aged care, Build to Rent,Hotel and Commercial office sectors. I am keen to assist the Passivhaus movement in Australia to increase its market share and to fulfil its potential."

Prior associations and affiliations

"I am a current member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and am undertaking training to maintain accredited membership."

Which role are you applying for?

"General Board Member"

The building industry accounts for almost 40% of all global carbon emissions worldwide. The buildings we design today will still be operational by 2050. Reaching net zero will require huge changes to our houses, offices, and schools and the way we live in them.
