We are excited to release the draft floor plan for the Trade Show at SPPHC 2020. There are opportunities across 2 separate rooms that will be accessible via the UNSW grounds for the duration of the event and opened into the adjoining conference at regular scheduled intervals across the 2 day event.

The fourth of its kind, this conference seeks to demonstrate the importance of well-conceived and consistent action in the building sector for a successful transition to healthier buildings and a sustainable energy future.

The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council Update

The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) meeting was held on 3 December 2019 at Parliament House in Canberra. Our Chairperson, Chris Nunn, attended representing APHA.

Chris gave an update to the ASBEC Group on learnings from the China International Passive House Conference. Clink on the link below for the full report.

With over 30 years’ experience in commercial and residential construction, Joe’s expertise and passion in the building industry has been instrumental in the growth of Blue Eco Homes. Joe initially established Joe Mercieca Constructions in 2003 following his success working for a large commercial construction company, prior to rebranding to Blue Eco Homes in 2010.

His leadership skills have seen the business grow, while his considered approach to the needs and motivation of his clients and his genuine desire for quality and sustainable construction has resulted in many successful and award-winning projects. Joe is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson as well as a HIA GreenSmart Professional and Master Builders Green Living builder.

Armed with a strong belief that ‘no challenge is too big’, Joe is leading the way in sustainable construction, which has naturally led to his interest in Passive House. This extends to the launch this year of a Certified Passive Display home built to bushfire BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) standard in the Blue Mountains NSW in order to promote the benefits of Passive House to the industry and wider community. Joe is involved in various influential construction groups to encourage the education and development of current industry bodies, staff and regulations, including his current role as vice chair of the Housing Industry Association (NSW) Training and Membership Committee and newly appointed role as a member of the APHA Board of Directors.

ArchiTeam Awards 2019

Congratulations to Talina Edwards Architecture and the Owl Woods Passive House, winner of the Sustainability Medal at the 2019 ArchiTeam Awards in Melbourne on 13 November!

The Sustainability Medal is awarded to the project entry with the most outstanding sustainability credentials.

Judges praised the project, saying it, "Raises the bar for what is achievable in Sustainable Architecture and homebuilding. This project is in line to be only the 5th (certified) Passivhaus single-detached home in Victoria. It is a project that demonstrates that the stringent requirements to achieve this certification can work in harmony with good design. The Owl Woods Passive House pavilions reach into the landscape and contain beautiful spaces that achieve a level of energy efficiency that all Architects should aspire to in their work."

Talina is hoping that this award will bring opportunities to help spread awareness about this smart and sensible way of building.

GAOBEIDIAN, CHINA - The Largest Passive House Project in the World

Check out this interesting article about Passive House developments in Gaobeidian Railway City, China. With 8 high rises, 12 multifamily buildings and 6 villas (330,000 square meters total!), the scale of this project takes building passive and green to a whole new level. It also shows what’s possible. It was also the location of the recent International Passive House Conference.

An Introduction to Passive House

Didn't get the chance to attend the recent GBCA and APHA event, An Introduction to Passive House?

Due to excellent feedback, we can confirm this event will take place in Sydney in February 2020!

Stay tuned for further details.

Tasmania Chapter News and Events

Thank you to Bee Newman and Stuart Mackenzie-Hall of Next50 Architects who showed us details of a current Passive House under construction in Hobart. It includes an unprecedented style of insulated slab as well as cross laminated timber (CLT) construction. We will be organising a site visit late January or early February as part of our next Tasmania Chapter catch-up.

We are planning a sponsored event that is CPD registered & a practical demonstration —it will be a half or full day schedule — which could be accompanied by a forum/symposium outlining particular fields of interest eg. air tightness, passive house windows and doors, passive house software, heat recovery ventilation etc. This will be seen as a stepping stone for Tasmanian builders across Bass Straight to do a Certified Passive House Tradespersons course.

Passive House Seminar: Goolwa, SA

Calling all builders, architects, and those looking to build their dream home!

Are you sick of paying high power bills?
Are you looking to build a climate resilient home?
Are you a builder or architect looking for the next big thing to offer your clients?

Passive House is a way of building that is energy efficient, comfortable year-round, affordable and sustainable, all at the same time.

With over 60,000 Passive House buildings worldwide, the concept is rapidly growing in popularity.

Passive House is not a brand name, but a construction standard that can be applied by anyone. It’s a proven model, with energy savings that beat other 'low energy' houses by up to 75%.

Come to this session to hear from the Australian Passive House Association about:

  • Five principles of Passive House to achieve above-and-beyond thermal and energy performance.
  • How high-performance buildings compare to contemporary building techniques in Australia.
  • Passive House examples – strawbale in Austria, brick in Adelaide, and the world’s biggest in China.
  • What’s involved – what components and materials you need, who to contact, and how to find out more.

You'll have the chance to inspect locally-available Passive House components and materials 'in the flesh', access information, and talk direct to an accredited Passive House builder. Come with an open mind and lots of questions!

WHEN: Thursday 6 February 2020, 5:30pm-7:30pm
WHERE: Council Chambers, 11 Cadell Street, Goolwa, SA 5214
